Abdeslam Ouaddou believes Orlando Pirates have done half the job on the road to the CAF Champions League group stage.

Details: Orlando Pirates secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Namibian champions African Stars in Botswana in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie. Head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou was delighted with the way his players handled the difficult conditions and followed the plan prepared by his technical staff.

Ouaddou praised his players and the club's analysis department for ensuring there were no surprises from the opposition.

“My boys did well, we started how we wanted, no surprises about the opponent, we had good information from my analysis department, well done to them. The first half we adapted well to the conditions, the heat, the pitch as well,” the coach said.

At the same time, the Moroccan tactician admitted Pirates could have made the result far more comfortable early in the match, but he was particularly satisfied with another strong defensive performance.

“We definitely could have scored two goals early, but I have to give credit to the team block. Defensively we were strong again, another clean sheet. We went without conceding a goal, which was the target, make tactical adjustments to get the away goal,” Ouaddou added.

The coach then made his boldest claim of the evening, suggesting that the Buccaneers are already very close to reaching their objective.

“We did it, the boys showed ambition to score this away goal, we could have scored more goals, but let's be happy. I think we succeeded the first half, we still have the second half in South Africa. I can say we have one foot in the group stage,” he said.

Nevertheless, Ouaddou immediately warned his players that the job is not finished and stressed the importance of proper recovery before the return leg at Orlando Stadium.

“We have an important second half, we have to prepare for this in order to get into the group stage. It's an important target for the club, the technical team, the players. We will make sure we rest and start this game to win it,” the Pirates boss concluded.

Reaching the group stage is a major objective for Orlando Pirates after they were eliminated at the same qualifying stage by Saint-Éloi Lupopo last season. It is also worth noting that Pirates are now unbeaten in 21 consecutive away matches in all competitions, recording 16 wins and five draws.
