Wednesday, August 7, became a landmark day for British sports.

Today, athletes from the UK won the milestone 1,000th medal for Britain at the Olympic Games. This includes 1,000 medals of all types won by the UK in both the Summer and Winter Olympics since the start of the modern era of competition in 1896.

The milestone medal was a silver medal won by the British cyclists in the men's team pursuit event on the track.

Britain first participated in the Summer Olympics in 1896, with ten athletes competing in seven sports. The first gold medal for the country was won by tennis player John Mary Pius Boland in 1896.
