"Betway Premiership will be a one-team championship for another 6-7 years!" Former Mamelodi player comments on the state of South African football
Soccer Laduma spoke with Dino Ndlovu, former South African international and Mamelodi Sundowns forward. He shared his thoughts on the level of the PSL and how it has changed since 2011.
Details: The 35-year-old striker discussed how players in the Betway Premiership are underpaid compared to clubs like Mamelodi Sundowns.
"From a sponsorship perspective, we have to give credit to the league’s management—they’ve done well to improve the financial situation of the championship," said Ndlovu.
"But what hurts me the most is that while the league is growing financially, other football clubs still refuse to pay players fairly—they pay them peanuts. That’s what pains me the most.
That’s why you see such a huge gap between the top three teams in the PSL. Sundowns are on top because they invest in their players and their infrastructure. On the other hand, there are teams that want players to give everything on the pitch, but they still do not want to pay them."
Ndlovu also shared his thoughts on the championship favorites for the coming years:
"In terms of league standards, I am absolutely convinced the championship will be a one-horse race for the next six or seven years, until teams realize that to attract good players, they need to invest—they need to pay players and invest in their own. You cannot neglect your own and expect good results."
"But football-wise, it’s exciting. I’ve seen that we have some talented young prospects, and that inspired me to come back and share my experience with them."
