Betway Premiership: Ertugral Pins City’s Revival Hopes on Serero Amid Struggles
Cape Town City FC is in turmoil after suffering their fourth consecutive Betway Premiership defeat, leaving them in 10th place with just six wins in 20 matches. However, interim coach Muhsin Ertugral believes that the arrival of Thulani Serero could be the turning point for the team.
Serero’s Impact and Midfield Woes
Serero, who returns to South African football after more than a decade in Europe and the Middle East, is expected to help City control possession and improve transitions in midfield.
“I spoke to Emirates and my former club Benghazi and got great feedback about him. He trained with us and is available for selection,” Ertugral confirmed.
“The problem for us is the middle—holding onto the ball. With experienced players like Serero, who has played at the highest level, we gain more stability in offensive transitions. Right now, we’re rushing our play, losing the ball, and inviting unnecessary pressure.”
Ertugral is eager to have Serero in the squad for Wednesday’s match against TS Galaxy at Athlone Stadium, provided his registration is completed in time.
Future Plans and Coaching Transition
Ertugral, set to move into a technical advisory role at the end of the season, has hinted that Andries Ulderink is likely to take over as head coach.
“I think we’ve already chosen the coach, and he’s seen the team in action,” Ertugral said. “By April, when we are in a safer position, we will start planning for next season and analyzing the squad.”
Rising Young Talent
Despite the struggles, City saw a historic debut from 16-year-old Emile Witbooi in their 2-0 loss to AmaZulu. Ertugral praised the youngster’s talent and hinted at a blend of youth and experience shaping the club’s future.
