Benfica is prepared to enter negotiations with Argentine footballer Ángel Di María regarding a new contract, as reported by journalist Nicolò Schira.

The Portuguese club has already initiated discussions with their winger regarding an extension until 2024. Although the current contract expires in the summer of 2024, there is a clause for extending the collaboration for an additional season, which Benfica aims to activate.

It's worth noting that in 2007, Benfica acquired Di Maria for €6 million. Benfica's president, Luís Filipe Vieira, stated that he secured an excellent replacement for Simão Sabrosa for the next 5 years. In 2010, Di Maria moved to Real Madrid and also had stints with Manchester United, PSG, and Juventus.

On July 5, 2023, the experienced 35-year-old player returned to Benfica. His first match after returning was in the Portuguese Super Cup 2023, where he celebrated his return with a decisive goal that secured the trophy for Benfica.

Incidentally, the young talent from Benfica, João Neves, is a coveted prospect for top European clubs, who will have to be exceedingly generous to attract him. Manchester United has shown interest in the 19-year-old midfielder, setting aside over a hundred million euros to persuade the "Eagles" to part with one of their leaders.
