One of Barcelona's most coveted transfers of the summer was the signing of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams. But the deal fell through and now the Blaugrana boss Joan Laporta is in trouble for it.

The latter was accused of lying, because he claimed the club had the financial possibilities and the transfer was on the finish line. And it was done not by anyone, but by Laporta's rival for the presidency in 2021, Victor Font.

He believes the club never had the capacity to formalise such a transfer:

"I would like us to sign Williams because that's what we need. The president said it was possible, but it's not true. It is impossible to do it today. We hope it will be possible tomorrow or the next day.

But today it is not. We sosios want to dream and believe what we are told. The problem is that for three summers now we have been told that everything is fine, we will sign players and everything will be solved. Every year our confidence in us goes down. And this summer, if the promises are not kept, the trust will drop even more," Font told The Athletic.

In the end, Williams refused to leave Athletic Bilbao in principle and preferred to stay with the team for another season to play with them in the European Cup.
