Today marked the penultimate match of the 2024 Copa América. In the battle for third place, Uruguay defeated Canada in a penalty shootout. Following this, bronze medalist and Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo is set to return to Spain for a medical examination after a previously sustained injury.

The exact extent of Araújo's injury remains unknown. Uruguayan doctors were unable to fully assess the severity due to inflammation in the area of the hamstring tendon, so the Catalan club hopes to get a clear picture after conducting their own medical examinations.

If the injury is confirmed, Araújo could be sidelined for two months, potentially missing the first matches of the upcoming La Liga season.

Additionally, Barcelona might face other issues with Araújo. FIFA may investigate an incident involving a fight between Uruguayan players and Colombian fans following the semifinals. If Araújo is found guilty, he could face a suspension, meaning he would miss matches regardless. This was reported by Diario AS.

Currently, the brawl incident is under investigation by CONMEBOL. If they issue a final decision, Araújo would be banned from national team duties, which would be the most favorable outcome for Barcelona.

It's worth noting that a similar fate could await Liverpool striker Darwin Núñez and Atlético Madrid defender José María Giménez.
