Barcelona president Laporta undergoes surgery. What happened?

Details: Barcelona president Joan Laporta revealed on Instagram that he has undergone a medical procedure to correct arrhythmia. According to the executive, the treatment was successful and his heart rhythm has been restored.

Laporta published a full statement about his health:

"Everything went well! The arrhythmia has been corrected! My heart is beating in rhythm again!

I am very grateful to the wonderful doctors, nurses, and all the medical staff at Barcelona Hospital, led by Dr. Jordi Morillas. They did an outstanding job.

Alongside their wisdom and deep knowledge, the human touch here is incredibly kind and attentive, filled with patience and care—qualities that elevate medicine and the Hippocratic oath itself.

This is further proof that in Barcelona and Catalonia, we do our work with the highest quality and at the highest level.

I am also especially proud of Barça’s medical service, led by Dr. Javier Corbella, and my chief of staff, Manana Giorgadze, who coordinated everything so efficiently.

I also want to thank Dr. Valentí Fuster and his entire team at Mount Sinai Clinic for their precise advice, which brought me peace of mind, as well as Dr. Brugada for recommending the arrhythmia correction procedure.

Finally, I want to thank my children, brothers, relatives, and friends for their support and care. Thank you all so much—truly, from the bottom of my heart," Laporta wrote.

Due to his health issues, the Barcelona president was forced to change his plans and did not travel with the team to the pre-season training camp in England. During his recovery, the club will be represented at the camp by vice president Rafa Yuste and sporting director Deco.

It’s worth noting that Laporta first led Barcelona from 2003 to 2010, returned to the post in 2021, and was re-elected president of the Catalan club in March 2026.
