On March 3, as part of the 27th round of the Spanish La Liga, Athletic Bilbao hosted Barcelona. Interestingly, the team from Bilbao hasn't lost at home since August when they were defeated by Real Madrid in the first round.
A victory for Barcelona would have placed them ahead of neighboring Girona, who lost again today, and moved them into second position.
The match was closely contested with a slight advantage for the visitors, but Barcelona lacked sharpness in front of Bilbao's goal, and they couldn't capitalize on their few opportunities. The match ended in a goalless draw, leaving Barcelona behind Girona in third place. Athletic Bilbao sits in fifth place with a comfortable eight-point lead over Real Betis.
