Bankole Kayode’s Dream Call-Up! Super Eagles’ Rising Star Ready for World Cup Qualifiers
Super Eagles and Remo Stars goalkeeper Bankole Kayode has expressed his excitement after being included in Eric Chelle’s final 23-man squad for Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
Dream Come True
The 22-year-old NPFL shot-stopper, known for his consistent performances, described his selection as a career-defining moment.
“I was very happy and excited when I got the news. It’s a dream come true,” he told Premium Times.
Kayode’s call-up makes him the first home-based goalkeeper in nearly two decades to push for a starting spot in a competitive Super Eagles match.
Fierce Competition for the No.1 Spot
With Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali (Chippa United) and Tanzania-based Amas Obasogie also in the squad, Kayode faces a battle for the starting position. However, the Remo Stars goalkeeper remains determined to prove himself.
“If I’m selected to play, I’ll give my best. The coach has the final decision, but I’m ready to fight for my place,” he said.
Eyes on the Prize
Nigeria faces Rwanda in Kigali on March 21 before hosting Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on March 25. The Super Eagles are in desperate need of wins after a slow start to their qualification campaign.
Kayode, embracing the challenge, stated, “Football is the same everywhere. Though the level is different, the best thing is to stay calm and communicate well. I will contribute my quota to the team, whether on the field or from the bench.”
