The assailant has been identified as 23-year-old Klaus Ainedter. The altercation occurred early in the morning outside a nightclub. Burgstaller was accompanied by a woman who asked a group of men, including Ainedter, for a lighter. The men mocked her Upper Austrian dialect, sparking a verbal dispute.
Ainedter struck Burgstaller, causing him to fall and hit his head. Unable to break his fall because his hands were in his pockets, the footballer sustained a severe head injury requiring hospitalization and potentially months of recovery.
Ainedter has taken full responsibility for his actions and issued an apology to Burgstaller and his family.
