Atlético's main defender is close to leaving the club as a free agent

It appears that Atlético Madrid will be without their main defender this summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Atlético is far from reaching an agreement to extend the contract of 28-year-old Spaniard Mario Hermoso. His contract with the club expires this summer, and he will leave the club as a free agent.

Earlier reports mentioned interest in Hermoso from Juventus and Barcelona, but according to the source, neither of these clubs is currently in negotiations with the Atlético player.

It is known that Hermoso has the option to continue his career in the Saudi Arabian league.

Hermoso is a product of Real Madrid's youth academy. He joined Atlético in the summer of 2019 from Espanyol for 25 million euros. In the current season, the 28-year-old defender has played 36 matches in all competitions and scored 2 goals.

Hermoso has earned 5 caps for the Spanish national team.
