Atletico Madrid close to signing Matteo Ruggeri

The young Italian has outshone other contenders for the spot.

Details: According to Fabrizio Romano, citing the Spanish newspaper Marca, negotiations have taken place between Atalanta and Atletico over the transfer of 22-year-old Matteo Ruggeri, with a deal potentially set to be finalized in the coming days.

Diego Simeone personally pushed for Ruggeri's signing, seeing him as a long-term solution for the wing-back position—thanks to his youth and impressive skill set.

Ruggeri is a product of the Atalanta academy and was promoted to the senior squad in the 2020/21 season. Since then, Matteo has made 109 appearances for the first team across all competitions, featuring in 38 matches and providing 3 assists last season. The portal Transfermarkt values Ruggeri at 16 million euros, and his current contract runs until 2028.
