Athletic Bilbao's Álex Berenguer fends off armed burglars from his home
Athletic Bilbao footballer Álex Berenguer and his wife, Sofia Djeme, narrowly escaped a burglary attempt at their home, according to Spanish newspaper El Correo.
Three armed men in balaclavas attempted to break into the couple’s residence. Berenguer managed to close the door just in time, preventing the intruders from entering.
The burglars reportedly pointed a gun at the footballer and his wife, but Berenguer was able to call the police, prompting the assailants to flee the scene.
Thankfully, neither Berenguer nor Sofia was harmed during the incident. Police have launched an investigation, though the perpetrators remain at large.
Break-ins targeting the homes of prominent footballers have become increasingly common in Spain. Recently, Sevilla player Valentín Barco's house was burglarized. Other victims of similar crimes include Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal, Karim Benzema, Marcos Llorente, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Fede Valverde.
Álex Berenguer has been playing for Athletic Bilbao since 2020, making 199 appearances and scoring 33 goals for the club.
