Arthur Zwane Reveals Half-Time Rally That Inspired AmaZulu’s Victory
AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane opened up about the decisive half-time talk that helped his side secure a 2-1 victory over Royal AM in a Betway Premiership match on Friday.
Hendrick Ekstein’s opportunistic strike in the 36th minute gave Usuthu a slender 1-0 lead at halftime after Royal AM goalkeeper Mondli Mpoto misjudged the ball’s flight. However, Zwane was far from satisfied with his team’s performance.
“We created chances but were not clinical,” said the former Kaizer Chiefs boss. “At halftime, I reminded the players of the dangers of leading 1-0. Even if we got the second goal without adding a third, we would give the opponents hope.”
Zwane criticized his players for losing focus and playing "for fun" instead of sealing the match: “In football, when a man is down, you push him further. You don’t give him a helping hand."
Mlondi Mbanjwa extended the advantage immediately after the half with a cross-like shot that struck the back of the net in the 48th minute, suggesting that his message was effective. AmaZulu managed to hold on for the victory even after Royal AM's Levy Mashiane pulled one back in the 78th minute.
Royal AM coach Maduka blamed his side’s defeat on errors in key moments: “The chances they had and the goals they scored were all due to our mistakes. The opponents wait for you to make mistakes.”
The win keeps AmaZulu in 11th place on the log, just one point ahead of 13th-placed Royal AM. Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates continue to lead the 16-member league.
AmaZulu will now look to build on this result as they aim to climb the table and achieve consistency under Zwane’s stewardship.
