Arsenal Legend Questions Salah's Contract Situation at Liverpool
Paul Merson, a great of Arsenal, has voiced his worries about Mohamed Salah's Liverpool contract, which is slated to expire next summer. In January, Salah, who will turn 33 next year, might begin negotiating a free transfer with other teams.
Writing in his column for Sportskeeda, Merson highlighted Liverpool's precarious handling of key players’ contracts, calling it a "major problem" for the club.
"At 33, Salah may seek a three-year deal, but offering £300,000 to £400,000 per week at this age is risky," Merson argued. "Football evolves quickly, and players' physical abilities decline faster than we often expect."
While acknowledging Salah’s excellent physical condition and potential longevity akin to Cristiano Ronaldo, Merson cautioned, "Even Ronaldo returned to this league scoring goals but didn’t necessarily elevate the team’s overall performance."
Merson said, "Salah could still be amazing next season and maybe even have another great year after that," suggesting that a two-year contract would be the best choice. But he thinks it's bad for Liverpool's management to let this issue continue.
He criticized Liverpool's way of handling the situation, calling it "a joke" and "not good enough from a football point of view," stressing that dealing with these issues early is very important.
"This contract problem should have been fixed eighteen months ago. It's really bad to let three top players finish their contracts," Merson said.
