Approval has been granted. Wimbledon will construct 39 new tennis courts
Wimbledon had plans for expansion, which sparked considerable debate. However, London authorities have granted the organizers permission to build new courts.
Details: According to BBC reports, Wimbledon’s controversial plans to construct 39 new tennis courts on protected open land opposite the All England Club have been approved. Additionally, there are plans to build a court with an 8,000-seat capacity.
London’s Deputy Mayor Jules Pipe stated that the social and economic benefits of this project outweigh the drawbacks. Deborah Jevans, the chair of the All England Club, explained that the construction of new courts would prevent Wimbledon from falling behind other Grand Slam tournaments, as the qualifying matches will now take place on-site.
Under the new project, up to 10,000 spectators will be able to watch qualifying matches daily, and as many as 50,000 will be able to attend the stadium each day during the main two-week tournament.
Furthermore, there are plans for the construction of a large court with a roof, which will allow matches to be held regardless of the weather.
Reminder: Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz has qualified for the ATP Finals, which will soon take place in Turin.
