Apologies haven't helped! Real Madrid matches are still not shown in China because of Mbappé
Even public apologies have failed to end Real Madrid's broadcasting crisis in China! The Spanish giants remain absent from major Chinese television coverage following Kylian Mbappé's controversial remarks, and Beijing has now explained why the situation remains unresolved.
Details: On November 6, Chinese ambassador to Spain Yao Jing told EFE that his government remains in communication with Real Madrid, LaLiga and Spanish institutions. However, he stressed that there are no formal negotiations and that the controversy needs time to settle. Despite apologies from Mbappé, Madrid and LaLiga, the broadcaster has not announced when coverage will resume.
The dispute began after a video circulated showing Mbappé discussing an internet meme with his face superimposed on former Chinese leader Mao Zedong. The Frenchman referred to the figure as a Chinese dictator without explicitly naming Mao. The remarks caused outrage in China, prompting state broadcaster CCTV to suspend LaLiga coverage. Madrid's November 1 victory against Racing Santander was also unavailable on the Migu streaming service.
The diplomatic response shows how sensitive the issue remains. Yao Jing said the incident had hurt many people's feelings. Embassy official Xie Tianyu separately explained that Chinese supporters needed time to process what happened, particularly because Real Madrid has enjoyed enormous popularity in the country. China Media Group has acknowledged the apologies but is also watching the player's future actions.
It's worth noting that China remains an important commercial market for Spanish football. According to Reuters, LaLiga's broadcasting agreements with CCTV and Migu run until the 2029/30 season and are worth approximately €10 million annually. No date has been confirmed for the restoration of Real Madrid broadcasts, although diplomatic contacts continue.
Reminder: One match from Messi! Mbappé enters an exclusive Champions League club.
