Another trophy for the Pirates. All Carling Knockout Cup winners
On December 6, South Africa wrapped up its second cup tournament of the current season. Following their victory in the MTN 8 Cup, Orlando Pirates claimed yet another piece of silverware by winning the Carling Knockout.
In the final, Abdessalam Ouaddou's team overcame Marumo Gallants, earning their second title in the history of this competition. Dailysports invites you to look back at all the winners of the Carling Knockout.
The tournament was established in 1982 as a competition for the 16 top-division teams under the name Datsun Challenge. The inaugural winners were Arcadia Shepherds from Pretoria, a club that has long since faded from the professional football scene in South Africa. The following year, Kaizer Chiefs lifted the trophy—a club that remains by far the most decorated team in the tournament’s history.
Notably, the competition has changed its name several times due to sponsorship deals. Coca-Cola, Rothmans, and Telkom have all served as sponsors at different times, and in 2023 (after a four-year hiatus), the tournament was revived with the help of Carling.
All Carling Knockout winners:
- Kaizer Chiefs — 13
- Mamelodi Sundowns — 4
- Bidvest — 3
- Cape Town Spurs, Jomo Cosmos, Platinum Stars, Umtata Bush Bucks, Orlando Pirates — 2
- SuperSport United, Bloemfontein Celtic, Arcadia Shepherds, Durban Bush Bucks, AmaZulu, Dynamos, Cape Town City, Baroka, Stellenbosch, Magesi — 1
