Liverpool have entered advanced negotiations to sign RB Leipzig defender Lutsharel Geertruida on loan.
Details: The 25-year-old Netherlands international is currently on loan at Sunderland from German side RB Leipzig. However, according to The Athletic, the clubs are discussing the possibility of terminating this deal early so the defender can move to Anfield before the transfer window closes. Sunderland are open to cooperation, given the strong relationship between the clubs.
The Reds' interest is driven by a genuine injury crisis in their defensive ranks. Both starting right-backs, Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, are sidelined, while the absence of Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni has left Arne Slot with virtually no options for rotation in central defence. All the pressure has fallen on Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté. Geertruida's versatility—capable of playing as a right-back, centre-back, or defensive midfielder—makes him an ideal candidate.
A crucial factor in this deal is the player's personal connection with the Reds' head coach. Geertruida was a key figure in Arne Slot's Feyenoord setup for three seasons before moving to Germany in 2024. Slot is thoroughly familiar with the defender's capabilities.
Lutsharel himself is already well-adapted to English football, having made 17 Premier League appearances for Sunderland this season. Transfermarkt values him at €20 million.
Reminder: Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike has matched the achievement of the legendary Robbie Fowler.
