André Onana Opens Up About His Relationship with Samuel Eto’o
André Onana, the goalie for Cameroon, has finally opened out about his contentious and long-lasting friendship with Samuel Eto'o. Because of Onana's early training at the Eto'o Academy, their connection was once perceived as a father-son bond. However, it soured, especially following the controversy surrounding former Indomitable Lions coach Rigobert Song.
Onana talked about his struggles in an interview with Canal+, including being benched at AFCON 2023 after losing his starting position to his cousin Fabrice Ondoa.
Onana played down previous tensions when discussing the matter, saying, "To be honest, a lot has happened, but it's all behind us now." For me, nothing matters more than my nation's triumph. First is Cameroon. Regardless of our personal opinions, we are willing to sacrifice everything for the identity this nation has given us. I work as a goalie. He was a striker. It's mine now; he had his. Everything has an end, and football is a generational sport.
From Qatar 2022 to AFCON 2023: A Rocky Road
Onana's issues with Fecafoot started when he was suddenly cut from the squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, allegedly at Eto'o's request.
His club career at Inter Milan was almost ruined by this circumstance, and the stress of the dispute even prompted his mother to have a stroke. After declaring his retirement from international competition, the Cameroonian goalie was convinced to come back in time for AFCON 2023 by the government. He was benched in favor of a third-division goalkeeper, though, which further humiliated his comeback.
Despite these struggles, Onana remains focused on his career and his ambitions:
“I want to be the best of the best. I want to win everything! But football is a collective sport, not tennis. To be the best goalkeeper in the world, you need a strong team and trophies.”
The Divide in Cameroon: “Hiboux” vs. “Zeglisiens”
Cameroonian football fans are split between two factions as a result of Onana's conflict with Eto'o: the "Hiboux," who oppose him, and the "Zeglisiens," who back Eto'o. Since his disagreement with the Fecafoot president, Onana has been called a "Hibou," but he is unconcerned with what the public thinks.
Reflecting on his career, Onana recognizes the generational shift happening in Cameroonian football:
“Football is a cycle. You come, you play your part, and you move on. The most important thing is the success of our country.”
Onana's statements imply that the conflict with Eto'o is still very much there even though emotions may have subsided. He is still focused on becoming a great goalkeeper at Manchester United and leaving a lasting legacy as one of Africa's best.
