Who will play in the final? Ancelotti on the choice of goalkeeper
In the recent months preceding each Real Madrid match, a pressing question arises: who shall stand guard at the goalposts, Kepa Arrizabalaga or Andriy Lunin?
In the yesterday's semifinal match of the Spanish Super Cup against Atlético (5:3), Carlo Ancelotti entrusted Kepa, who erred in the episode leading to the third conceded goal. Nevertheless, the head coach of Real Madrid remained content with the Spaniard.
"We have yet to decide who will play in the final. Kepa performed admirably today", – declared Ancelotti after the match.
Simultaneously, Marca reports that before the game, Ancelotti had to engage in a conversation with Andriy Lunin to prevent a deterioration of the Ukrainian goalkeeper's morale. The Italian coach assured Lunin that he would have ample playing time until the end of the season.
It is reasonable to recall that Real Madrid's primary goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, is sidelined for the entire season due to a cruciate ligament rupture. Immediately following his injury, the club secured Kepa on loan from Chelsea.
In the current season, Lunin has featured in 10 matches across all competitions, keeping a clean sheet in 5 of them. Kepa, on the other hand, has participated in 17 matches, securing 7 clean sheets.
