An unexpected battle for the global throne. Argentina’s football chief sets sights on the FIFA presidency
Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia plans to put forward his candidacy for the presidency of the world governing body FIFA in the upcoming 2027 election.
Details: According to Motivaciones Fútbol, the influential Argentine football official intends to challenge current FIFA president Gianni Infantino, as well as Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, for the most powerful position in world football. The upcoming campaign is set to be one of the most intriguing in decades, against the backdrop of intensifying political tensions within the sport’s governing structures.
Tapia’s position has been significantly strengthened after it emerged that CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani and UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin had ruled out personal participation in the electoral race. In the current configuration, the AFA chief could emerge as the Americas’ leading consensus candidate. The vote is scheduled for March 18, 2027, as part of the congress in Morocco.
It is worth noting that Claudio Tapia has led Argentine football since March 2017. Under his stewardship, the national team experienced a golden era in the country’s modern history: La Albiceleste successively won the Copa América, the Finalissima and the long-awaited World Cup title at the 2022 tournament in Qatar, significantly enhancing the official’s standing on the international stage.
