As football prepares to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d'Or, one extraordinary record deserves special attention. The first player ever to receive the prestigious trophy was already 41 years old, and nobody has managed to surpass his achievement.

Details: On December 18, 1956, legendary English winger Stanley Matthews became the inaugural Ballon d'Or winner while representing Blackpool. He was exactly 41 years and 321 days old, making him the oldest recipient in the award's history. According to the official Ballon d'Or website, Matthews defeated Real Madrid superstar Alfredo Di Stéfano in the voting. His remarkable achievement remains unmatched seven decades later.

Matthews was nicknamed the Wizard of the Dribble because of his extraordinary technique and ability to beat defenders. He played for Stoke City and Blackpool, winning the FA Cup with the latter in 1953. His performances during the 1955/56 campaign helped Blackpool finish second in the English top flight, strengthening his reputation as one of Europe's finest footballers.

Even more astonishingly, winning the Ballon d'Or did not mark the end of his career. Matthews continued playing professionally until he was 50, representing Stoke City in his final years. He also earned 54 appearances for England. His longevity was supported by remarkable discipline, careful preparation and a commitment to physical fitness that was unusual for his era.

It's worth noting that the 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony takes place in London on October 26, marking 70 years since Matthews received the inaugural prize. The English legend remains the oldest winner, ahead of Lionel Messi and Karim Benzema. This year's candidates will compete for an award whose history began with one of football's most extraordinary careers.

Reminder: Boom! The 2026 Ballon d'Or winner has been revealed!
