On August 7, 2024, the final race of the 3000 meters steeplechase took place at the Olympics. During the competition, a dreadful incident occurred.
Ethiopian representative Lamecha Girma stumbled over a barrier at high speed, lost his balance, fell, and struck his head on the track. Consequently, he was carried off the stadium on a stretcher and hospitalized.
It is worth recalling that Girma set the world record in this very discipline in June 2023 at the Diamond League in Paris, clocking in at 7 minutes 52.11 seconds. Additionally, he secured a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
As for the race at this Olympics, the victory was claimed by Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali, who completed the distance in 8 minutes 6.05 seconds, successfully defending his 2020 gold medal.
Additionally, 20-year-old Australian skateboarder Keegan Palmer won the gold medal in the park discipline at the 2024 Olympics, marking his second Olympic gold.
