Aliou Cissé: “AFCON 2025 Will Be Turning Point for African Football”
The forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be held in Morocco, has been hailed by Senegal national team coach Aliou Cissé as a historic occasion and watershed for the African continent.
"It's a wonderful experience to be here and participate in the draw for the tournament," Cissé said, expressing his delight during the AFCON draw event in Rabat.
"Our national team needs no introduction," Cissé said, highlighting Senegal's excellent position in international football. "We’re among the top 20 team in the world according to FIFA rankings.”
He attributed this progress to the experience of Senegalese players:
“Some of our players have competed in four or five AFCON tournaments, as well as 2 World Cups. We also have group of young guys who’re highly ambitious. We go into every competition with the same objective after taking home the AFCON title: to win.
Cissé highlighted the tournament's expansion, pointing to advancements in coaching standards, team preparation, and infrastructure: “The competition has grown more competitive and attracts international attention since it was expanded from 16 to 24 teams. Players are prepared to quit their teams in the middle of the season to take part in this celebration for all of Africa”.
"Success requires hard work, patience, and a bit of luck," the Senegal coach said, emphasizing the value of preparation and perseverance. The perfect timing is essential for players to perform at their best, and they must stay competitive all the way through. Even though things can be difficult in Africa, persistence always pays off in the end.
Cissé's comments highlight Senegal's resolve to remain one of Africa's best footballing nations and the AFCON tournament's rising prominence.
