Alejandro Dominguez apologizes after controversial remark about Brazilian teams
CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez has apologized following his remarks about the significance of Brazilian teams in the Copa Libertadores, which sparked discontent in Brazil.
During the group stage draw in Paraguay, Infobae reports that when asked about the possibility of the tournament without clubs from that country, he replied: "It would be like Tarzan without Cheetah. Impossible," which led to criticism and accusations of racism.
Through his social media, Dominguez clarified that his comment was a popular expression and not intended to demean anyone.
"The CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores is unthinkable without the participation of clubs from the 10 member countries. I have always promoted respect and inclusion in football and society," he stated.
The Paraguayan official also took the opportunity to highlight the growth of continental tournaments, mentioning the fight against racism, increased prize money, and the expanding global audience of the Libertadores and Sudamericana. Additionally, he announced that the tournament winner will receive $24 million, one million more than in 2024.
