Alcaraz, Djokovic, and Świątek learn their first opponents: Australian Open first-round draw
The first Grand Slam tournament of the year, the Australian Open 2025, kicks off on January 12. Today, the draw for the first round was held, revealing the first-round opponents for all the tournament's favorites.
Details: The ATP world No. 1 was immediately handed a challenging opponent. The Italian will face Chile's Nicolás Jarry, currently ranked 34th in the world.
Carlos Alcaraz will take on Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko (No. 74 ATP), while Novak Djokovic is set to face 19-year-old American Nishesh Basavareddy (No. 133 ATP). The second-ranked Alexander Zverev will compete against the experienced Frenchman Lucas Pouille, who is currently ranked 103rd in the world.
Also worth noting is the return of Australian legend Nick Kyrgios, who has been drawn against Britain's Jacob Fearnley (No. 86 ATP).
In the women’s draw, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will face former world No. 6 Sloane Stephens, who now sits at No. 84 in the WTA rankings.
Iga Świątek, starting the year as world No. 2, will compete against Czech player Kateřina Siniaková (No. 46 WTA), while world No. 3 Coco Gauff is set to face fellow American Sofia Kenin (No. 81 WTA).
The reigning Australian Open champion in the men’s draw is Jannik Sinner, while Aryna Sabalenka triumphed in the women’s tournament last year.
