South Korean footballer Hwang Ui-jo, who plays for Alanyaspor, has been convicted of secretly recording a sexual encounter with his partner without her consent, according to Yonhap news agency. The court handed him a suspended prison sentence.

The scandal came to light in June 2023 when one of Hwang’s relatives publicly released the footage in an alleged blackmail attempt. An investigation later revealed that the player had secretly filmed intimate videos on four occasions between June and September 2022 without the consent of his partners.

Hwang was charged in relation to two victims and admitted guilt regarding one of them. During his court appearance in October 2024, he pleaded guilty, apologized to the victim, and requested leniency in sentencing.

Prosecutors had sought a four-year prison term, but the court took into account Hwang’s remorse and the fact that he had not shared the recordings online. Meanwhile, his relative, who attempted to extort him, received a three-year prison sentence for blackmail.

The 32-year-old forward has previously played for clubs such as Nottingham Forest and Bordeaux and has made 62 appearances for the South Korean national team.
