Austrian defender David Alaba has been included in Real Madrid's extended squad for the Spanish Super Cup, set to take place this week in Saudi Arabia.

This marks Alaba's first squad selection since June 1, when Real played in the UEFA Champions League final. The last time the defender appeared on the pitch was December 17, 2023.

Over a year ago, Alaba sustained a knee injury during a match against Villarreal, which sidelined him for more than 12 months. He returned to training around the New Year and has now been included in the squad for a match for the first time.

At the moment it is not known in what condition Alaba is in. However, earlier the coach of the ‘Royal Club’ Carlo Ancelotti said that David may get playing time in the Spanish Super Cup.

The Spanish Super Cup features two stages: the semifinals and the final.

On January 9, Real Madrid will face Mallorca in the semifinal of the mini-tournament. If victorious, they will play in the final on January 12 against either Barcelona or Athletic Bilbao.

Previously, reports suggested that Real Madrid remains uncertain about relying on Alaba for critical matches before March.

Currently, Real Madrid sits at the top of La Liga, holding a narrow two-point lead over Atletico Madrid, who also have a game in hand.
