The Eredivisie saw its final round of fixtures on Sunday, May 18, with PSV and Ajax locked in a dramatic long-distance battle for the championship crown.
The club from Eindhoven surged into the lead last round, capitalizing on a shocking meltdown by the capital’s Ajax. Just five games before the finish, the Amsterdam side held a nine-point advantage over PSV, but ultimately let the title slip away.
All PSV needed in the final round was an away win against Sparta to secure back-to-back championships. Veteran stars Ivan Perišić and Luuk de Jong delivered the decisive goals. Ajax also won their match, but it wasn’t enough—they had to settle for second place.
It’s now the 26th time in history that the Eindhoven club has claimed the Dutch championship. Francesco Farioli and his Ajax squad have only themselves to blame—blowing such a commanding lead is truly remarkable in all the wrong ways.
