The 27-year-old Belarusian has explained her behavior and addressed Coco Gauff.
Details: In an interview with Eurosport Germany, Sabalenka admitted that her comments about Gauff after losing at Roland Garros were a mistake.
Back then, during her post-match press conference in Paris, Sabalenka suggested that the outcome was more a result of her own errors than Gauff’s skill:
“I think she won the match not because she played incredibly, but simply because I made all those mistakes. If you look at it from the outside—I lost because of easy balls,” Sabalenka said at the time.
But now Aryna says she deeply regrets those remarks:
“That was completely unprofessional on my part. I let my emotions take over. I absolutely regret what I said back then. You know, we all make mistakes. I’m just a person who’s still learning in life.
I think everyone has days when we lose control.
But I also want to say that I wrote to Coco later—not immediately, but recently. I never intended to attack her. I was overly emotional and not very smart at that press conference.
It took me some time to go back and reflect on it, to approach it with open eyes and understand. I learned a lot about myself. Why have I lost so many finals?” Sabalenka told Eurosport Germany.
Sabalenka had already lost a final to Coco Gauff at the 2023 US Open. This latest defeat marks the Belarusian’s second head-to-head loss to the American.
