The Moroccan international says he is ready to face the courts and defend his side of the story.

Whilst currently at the World Cup with the Moroccan national team, Achraf Akimi has received news that is likely to shape the coming months of his career. On Friday 19 June, the Investigating Chamber of the Versailles Court of Appeal confirmed that he is to be referred to the Criminal Court to stand trial on rape charges.

In response to this announcement, the Paris Saint-Germain player has spoken out publicly. He says he has been waiting for this legal hearing since the case began.

“The justice system looked me in the eye and said: ‘If you weren’t famous, there would never have been a case.’ I chose to remain silent for years. I thought that maintaining my dignity, being patient and trusting the justice system would ensure the right decisions were made.

Today, a story that is not my own is being told at the expense of my family, my life and, above all, the truth. I sometimes feel as though I have become an easy target. I have been waiting for this trial since day one. And I am now looking forward to it. At last, I will be able to speak out.”
