Abbey George Blames Super Eagles for Costly World Cup Qualifying Draw
After a poor 1-1 tie, Nigeria's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup were severely damaged, and former Super Eagles defender Abbey George was unhappy with the team's performance.
Despite high expectations following their 2-0 victory over Rwanda, the Super Eagles failed to secure another win, dropping crucial points in the race for an automatic World Cup spot.
Star-Studded Squad Fails to Deliver
Nigeria had top talents like Victor Osimhen, Moses Simon, Ademola Lookman, Tolu Arokodare, Alex Iwobi, and Wilfred Ndidi in their lineup. However, the team failed to control the match or show the quality expected from a squad packed with European-based stars.
Abbey George: “Everyone is Responsible”
Abbey George, a 2004 AFCON bronze medalist, told Brila FM that the entire team must take responsibility for the poor result.
"It was sad to see, but the coach and the players have to take responsibility," he said, emphasizing that Nigeria lost valuable points in a match they should have won.
Can Nigeria Still Qualify?
Nigeria is now in third place with just seven points out of a possible eighteen, six points behind group leaders South Africa. There is still a remote possibility of catching up, though, since South Africa might drop points if they pitch an ineligible player against Lesotho.
