The 'Colchoneros' will have to lure a head coach away from their direct rivals.
Details: According to journalist Ramón Álvarez de Mon on his social network page X, Atlético Madrid’s management has picked the 60-year-old Spanish Villarreal manager as the replacement for Diego Simeone, who may leave the club next year.
Simeone’s contract with Atlético runs until 2027, but media reports indicate it will not be extended, as the club’s board is looking to begin a new era and rebuild the squad.

Marcelino’s tactical style and success at the helm of Villarreal have made him the ideal candidate to replace Simeone in the eyes of the Atlético board.
Diego Simeone took charge of Atlético Madrid back in 2011. Since then, he has become a true club legend, managing 769 matches with 456 wins, 156 draws, and 148 defeats. Under Simeone, Atlético have claimed two La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, one Spanish Super Cup, two UEFA Europa Leagues, and two UEFA Super Cups.
As for Marcelino, he took over Villarreal in 2023. This season, his team has been phenomenal and currently sits fourth in La Liga, posing a direct challenge to Atlético in the race for medals.
