A return is on the horizon! Formula 1 will return to Africa after more than 30 years
South Africa's efforts to bring Formula 1 back to the country have intensified, and the bidding process has already begun. The announcement from the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture (DSAC) is an important step in the country's bid to host Formula 1 again after more than 30 years.
Details: DSAC has officially launched the tender process. The last Formula 1 race in South Africa took place in 1993, when the Kyalami circuit hosted the South African Grand Prix, which turned out to be Alain Prost's last victory.
DSAC has invited interested promoters to participate in the official tender, as they seek a suitable partner to organize the Formula 1 Grand Prix. The tender documentation, published on the DSAC website this past weekend, states that they are looking for a partner to sign a 10-year contract.
Reminder: South Africa has a long history in Formula 1, dating back to 1960, with the first Grand Prix held at Kyalami in 1967. The circuit remained on the calendar until 1993.
Kyalami is the obvious candidate to host the race due to its historical significance, infrastructure, and recently awarded FIA Grade 1 status. However, other locations also have the opportunity to submit proposals to the South African authorities before negotiations with Formula 1.
Last month, Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, expressed South Africa's intention to prepare for negotiations with Formula 1 and emphasized the full support from the government.
