Rafael Nadal, one of the greatest tennis players ever, played what could be his last professional match and lost in the Davis Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The 38-year-old Spanish player was defeated by Dutch player Botic van de Zandschulp with scores of 6-4, 6-4 in Málaga, Spain.

In front of an enthusiastic crowd, Nadal gave a very emotional farewell speech. For Nadal, who has won 22 Grand Slam titles, the defeat was a significant end to his illustrious career and gave the Netherlands a 1-0 lead in the competition.

Nadal, who missed the majority of 2023 due to a hip injury, has been having health and performance issues. As a result, he didn't play as well as he typically does.

After the game, Nadal gave a reflection on his journey, saying, "My body is telling me it's time, but nobody wants this moment to come. I’m incredibly fortunate to have lived my dream and achieved more than I imagined. I’m deeply grateful.”

Fans flooded social media with tributes, celebrating Nadal’s legacy:

“Generational icon, warrior, and an inspiration. Thank you, Rafa.”

“Not just a tennis player, but a symbol of resilience and humility.”

“It has been a privilege to watch you play tennis. Thank you Rafa!”

“Congratulations on his retirement a true legend.... He will be remembered forever”

“The greatest athlete of my generation. I'll miss you my boy!!”

The curtain may have fallen, but Rafael Nadal’s impact will resonate across generations.

“A true champion. Not just in tennis. Congratulations on an amazing career and thank you for the pleasure of watching you compete.”
