A leader not only in the locker room, but also on the pitch.
Details: In yesterday’s match of the 8th round of the group stage in the qualifying campaign, the Netherlands hosted Lithuania. While the game was a routine affair for the Oranje, it still delivered a milestone moment.
It was Liverpool’s 34-year-old defender Virgil van Dijk who led the Dutch side onto the field as captain. This match marked Van Dijk’s 72nd appearance as captain, making him the all-time record holder for most matches wearing the armband for the Netherlands.
This record previously belonged to Frank de Boer, who captained the side 71 times.
Van Dijk received his first call-up for the Netherlands in 2015 and, over more than 11 years, has played 88 matches for the national team, scoring 11 goals.
The Netherlands have secured direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup, finishing top of their group with 20 points.
