Chelsea have reached an agreement in principle with Xabi Alonso to appoint him as the club’s new head coach. According to Fabrice Hawkins, the parties have settled the terms of a long-term contract, set for at least two years.
The London club reportedly see the 43-year-old Spaniard as the figure capable of stabilizing the situation and ushering in a new era for the team. Alonso, in turn, will be given significant influence over squad building, including an active role in the club’s transfer strategy for the upcoming summer window.
To recap, after Liam Rosenior’s departure in April, Callum MacFarlane took over as interim manager. Previously, Rosenior had replaced Enzo Maresca, whose exit was announced at the beginning of January.
It is expected that after the season concludes and the FA Cup final is played, the administrative procedures for Alonso’s appointment will accelerate, with an official announcement likely to follow soon.
