A historic first. PSG crowned winners of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup
On Wednesday, December 17, the final of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup took place, with PSG facing Flamengo.
The first half ended with a narrow lead for the Parisians. In the 38th minute, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put his team ahead. Another goal by Fabián Ruiz was later disallowed after a VAR review.
Although the Brazilian side managed to equalize after the break. A PSG defender fouled a Flamengo player, and Jorginho converted the penalty convincingly – 1-1. The regular time ended in a 1-1 draw.
During extra time, both teams had chances to score, but neither could find the winning goal, and the match went to a penalty shootout.
In the 11-meter shootout, PSG goalkeeper Safonov emerged as the hero, saving four penalties. With a 2-1 scoreline in the shootout, the Parisians claimed the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, marking the first trophy in the club’s history.
