A fantastic record. Exactly 13 years ago Messi scored his 91st goal in a single year
Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland continue to produce outstanding football and score goals at an impressive rate, but no one has managed to approach Lionel Messi’s record.
Details: Exactly 13 years ago, on December 22, 2012, Lionel Messi scored against Valladolid in a La Liga Round 13 match. It was his 91st goal in a single calendar year. That tally included 79 goals for Barcelona and 12 for Argentina.
He set a new world record, surpassing Gerd Müller’s long-standing mark of 85 goals in one year.
The closest to this record were Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013 and Robert Lewandowski in 2021. Both players scored 69 goals in a single calendar year.
Reminder: Lionel Messi visited Kolkata, where he took part in the unveiling of a 21-meter monument dedicated to him.
