A dismal streak: no American has won NBA season MVP since 2019

The NBA's 2024-2025 Most Valuable Player award has gone to Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Canadian star has extended a frustrating streak for American players.
Details: No American has claimed the league's top individual honor for seven consecutive seasons. The last U.S.-born player to earn the MVP was James Harden of the Houston Rockets back in the 2017/2018 campaign.
Since then, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic have each won the MVP back-to-back. Some may argue that Joel Embiid, who took the award in 2022/2023 and now represents the United States, broke the run—but he was officially recognized as a Cameroonian when he captured the title.
Reminder: Last season, Jokic was named the league's best player for the third time. Among active NBA players, only LeBron James has more MVP awards than the Serbian big man.
