West Ham have stumbled out of the gate in the Championship, putting head coach Nuno Espírito Santo’s job at serious risk. The Portuguese manager was tasked with bringing the London club back to the Premier League after relegation, but the opening of the campaign has been anything but convincing.

Former professional footballer and current BBC Sport pundit Aaron McLean believes that major changes are needed at West Ham. According to him, the team must significantly improve their mental approach and perhaps even make changes to the squad.

As a reminder, in the opening round the Hammers let a two-goal lead slip and drew 2-2 with Burnley. On Saturday, August 22, they suffered a home defeat to Charlton by a score of 1-2. Notably, Charlton finished last season only 19th in the Championship.

The upcoming schedule for the Londoners looks daunting. On August 29, West Ham travel to face Watford, then host fellow relegated side Wolverhampton, and on September 5, they go up against Derby.

As such, the next three matches could be decisive for Nuno. If West Ham collect no more than four or five points from these fixtures, the club’s management may opt to make an early decision on the Portuguese specialist’s future.
