A simple gesture of solidarity turned into a full-blown witch hunt against the Moroccan footballer in his homeland.

Details: Real Betis and Morocco winger Abde Ezzalzouli has faced a fierce wave of criticism and direct accusations of betraying national interests from his compatriots. The widespread outrage was triggered by the 24-year-old's participation in a pre-match social initiative ahead of the La Liga clash with Villarreal, when both teams took to the field wearing shirts in solidarity with the residents of the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta.

The situation took on an explosive geopolitical dimension, as Ceuta is located on the coast of North Africa and Morocco officially disputes Spain's sovereignty over the region. The appearance of a Morocco international in clothing supporting the enclave sparked a torrent of abuse on social media, prompting the forward to temporarily hide posts on his profile.

To put an end to the escalating conflict, Ezzalzouli published an official statement on his Instagram page, explaining the motives behind his actions:

“I am writing this statement to clarify the situation that occurred during the league match against Villarreal. First of all, I want to make it clear that this shirt bearing a message of support for the residents of Ceuta was in no way used for political purposes or to show disrespect toward my people — the Moroccan people. It was a social initiative intended to support the population and its residents, regardless of their nationality, as they were going through a difficult situation. Nevertheless, this is not an excuse for anyone. And all those who wish to use this to question my love for my country have the right to do so. As for me, I will continue to live every day with my head held high and represent my roots with pride and dedication.”

It is worth noting that Abde Ezzalzouli has represented Real Betis since September 2023, following his move from Barcelona. In the 2025/26 season, the Moroccan forward made 43 appearances for the Andalusian club in all competitions, scoring 15 goals and providing 13 assists. According to Transfermarkt, the player's current market value stands at €40 million.
