June 27 will forever remain one of the brightest days in the history of Icelandic football, because their favourites won their last victory at the European Championships eight years ago. And what a victory - they knocked out England in the round of 16 with score 2:1. The Dailysports team tells you where the Vikings are now, who left the Three Lions out of Euro:2016.

Goalkeeper - Hannes Halldorsson (32 years old at the time of the tournament)

Halldorsson was the main goalkeeper for the Icelandic side at Euro 2016, playing in all five matches at the tournament. At club level, he was then representing Norway's Bodo/Glimt. After playing two more seasons at Danish Randers, he left for his homeland in 2019, where he finished his career with Valur in January 2023. He was already 38 years old at the time.

Left defender - Ari Skulason (29 years old at the time of the tournament)

Skulason also enjoyed the confidence of the coaches, and at Euro 2016 he played in all five of the team's matches. At club level, he then represented Odense of Denmark, from which he moved to Belgian side Lokeren after the tournament.

After qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, Skulason stopped being called up to the Iceland national team. He is now 37 years old and represents Swedish fourth division team Silvia.

Centre-back – Kari Arnason (34 years old at the time of the tournament)

Arnason was on his way to the tournament in France as an age player, but even at that age he was performing at a pretty decent level for the Icelanders, representing one of the giants of Swedish football, Malmö.

In January 2017 he left for Omonia of Cyprus, and then played for teams from Scotland and Turkey until he finished his career at home with Vikingur at the end of 2021.

Centre-back - Ragnar Sigurdsson (30 years old at the time of the tournament)

The most colourful part of Sigurdsson's career can be called his performances for Fulham, which began just after Euro 2016, where, among other things, it was he who hit the English goal in the 1/8 final match. Then the centre-back changed five clubs (Rubin, Rostov, Copenhagen, Rukh Lviv and Fülkir) and three countries (Russia, Denmark, Ukraine).

But, in the end, he failed to establish himself anywhere and in January 2022 he finished his career.

Right defenceman - Birkir Seavarsson (32 years old at the time of the tournament)

Sevarsson can be called quite a loyal player, because in 21 years of professional appearances he represented only three clubs: Valur, Norwegian Brann and Swedish Hammarby. Actually, in the first one in his homeland he still plays to this day, being the main defender of his team even at the age of 38.

He, like Skulason, stopped being called up to the national team after the selection for the World Cup 2022.

Left midfielder - Birkir Bjarnason (28 years old at the time of the tournament)

Bjarnason has changed a lot of clubs during his career, but he spent his career mostly in Italy, representing Pescara, Sampdoria and Brescia, for whom he spent last season in Serie B.

Notably, he has been called up to the national team until July 2023, although he actually stopped playing regularly for the national team during the last Nations League campaign.

Centre midfielder - Gylfi Sigurdsson (26 years old at the time of the tournament).

Sigurdsson can be called one of the most star players of that team, because he spent most of his career in England (and not for the most recent teams: Reading, Swansea, Tottenham, Everton).

In July 2022, he left the Toffees and suspended his career for a year. He now plays in his home country with Valiur. He has not played regularly for the national team since November 2020.

Centre midfielder - Aron Gunnarsson (27 years old at the time of the tournament)

Gunnarsson left Iceland for AZ at the age of 17, but he failed to establish himself in the Netherlands. He had his star moment in the English lower leagues with Coventry and Cardiff City. In 2019, he left for Qatar's Al Arabi, which he left this summer as a free agent.

He has played 103 matches for the national team, the last being relatively recently in November 2023.

Right midfielder - Johan Gudmundsson (26 years old at the time of the tournament)

Gudmundsson has played for far from recent teams. For a certain period of time he was brought up in London Chelsea and Fulham. A brief period of return to his native Breidablik was marked by a repeated attempt to conquer the old continent, and he succeeded.

True, not on the continent itself, but in England, where he ended up at Charlton in 2014. After Euro 2016, he moved to Burnley, which he will leave only on 1 July 2024 as a free agent.

Gudmundsson continues to play for the Icelandic national team, which he has led onto the pitch with the captain's armband for the past year and a half.

Forward - Kolbeinn Sigthorsson (26 years old at the time of the tournament)

The forward has made a name for himself with some pretty good teams, becoming a three-time Dutch champion with Ajax. He was sold to Nantes in 2015, and after the European Championships, and including a goal against England, he was wanted by Galatasaray, who took him on a one-year loan.

After leaving Nantes in 2019, Sigthorsson ended up in Sweden and it was with IFC Gothenburg in January 2022 at the age of 31 that the forward finished his career.

Forward - Jon Dadi Bödvarsson (24 years old at the time of the tournament)

Another forward in the Icelandic national team left his homeland quite early and started to conquer European clubs. After the European Championship he was bought by English Wolverhampton, and he stayed in England for at least a good eight years.

The last two and a half years he represented Bolton, and before that - Reading and Milwall, but most likely the team he will leave as a free agent.

He has not been called up to the Iceland national team since March 2022.

Coach - Lars Lagerback (66 years old at the time of the tournament)

The specialist worked with the Icelandic team for four years and left it immediately after Euro 2016 on a wave of success. Then he led the Norwegian national team for three years, and in 2020 he returned to the Icelandic national team for a year, but already as technical director.
