£350,000 disaster looming! Manchester United make official move to save their 16-year-old wonderkid
Manchester United have taken an important step to protect their rights to JJ Gabriel, but the future of their teenage sensation remains in serious doubt.
Details: According to The Guardian journalist Sam Cunningham, Manchester United have formally offered 16-year-old forward JJ Gabriel a scholarship for next season. The youngster, who celebrated his birthday on October 6, requested the cancellation of his registration last month, attracting interest from Europe's biggest clubs.
The scholarship offer has significantly changed the situation. Without it, Gabriel could have joined another Premier League club for free in January. Now, any English top-flight side interested in signing him must agree a compensation fee with United or have the amount determined by a tribunal.
In that scenario, Manchester United could receive more than £3 million, potentially including a 20% sell-on clause. However, a move abroad would be considerably cheaper, with FIFA's compensation mechanism allowing the forward to leave for approximately £350,000.
Despite the offer, Gabriel is considered highly unlikely to remain at Old Trafford. Disagreements over first-team playing time have reportedly damaged relations between the parties, while Real Madrid are regarded as favourites to secure his signature.
It is worth noting that Gabriel joined Manchester United's academy at the age of 11 and was named the Premier League Under-18 Player of the Season last term.
