The battle between English and Spanish football has produced a remarkable historical statistic.

Details: Since the Ballon d'Or was established in 1956, players representing clubs in Spain's top division have won the prestigious individual award 24 times. Meanwhile, footballers playing in England's top flight have claimed the trophy on just seven occasions. The comparison covers the entire history of the men's award, including the years before the Premier League was established in 1992.

The difference between the two championships stands at 17 awards. Spanish clubs have therefore collected more than three times as many Ballon d'Or trophies as their English counterparts.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have played a central role in Spain's dominance of this particular statistic. Lionel Messi won six of his eight Ballon d'Or awards while representing Barcelona, while Cristiano Ronaldo claimed four of his five Golden Balls during his time at Real Madrid.

England's seven winners are Stanley Matthews, Denis Law, Bobby Charlton, George Best, Michael Owen, Cristiano Ronaldo and Rodri. Manchester United alone accounted for four of those victories, with Law, Charlton, Best and Ronaldo all receiving the award while representing the club.

It is worth noting that Rodri became the most recent player from an English club to win the men's Ballon d'Or in 2024, when he received the award as a Manchester City midfielder. The next winner will be announced at the 2026 ceremony on October 26.
