2026 Hopes Fading? Utaka Urges Super Eagles to Fight On

Former Nigerian international John Utaka has called on the Super Eagles to stay focused and united in their pursuit of a 2026 FIFA World Cup spot, despite a tough qualifying campaign.

Nigeria in trouble after missed chances

The Super Eagles currently sit fourth in Group C with just seven points from six matches. They missed a crucial opportunity last month, settling for a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe after conceding late. Although they bounced back with a 2-0 win over Rwanda, their qualification hopes remain on thin ice.

Utaka: “We must not give up”

Speaking to Brila FM, Utaka—who earned 44 caps and scored 6 goals for Nigeria—shared his frustration but urged belief:

“With the kind of talent we have, we shouldn’t be in this position. We need to come together and stay focused. We must be determined like other countries.”

“In football, anything can happen. We shouldn’t give up. I still believe we can qualify, but it depends on how we approach the games ahead.”

Group C standings after 6 games:

• South Africa – 13 pts
• Benin – 8 pts
• Rwanda – 8 pts
• Nigeria – 7 pts

With only one win so far, Nigeria must win all four remaining matches and rely on rivals to drop points to stand a chance.
