2025 Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana draws: When and where will they take place?
The 2025 Copa Libertadores has all its teams qualified, with several continental giants ready to compete in the group stage. Among the most notable names are River Plate, Palmeiras, Flamengo, Peñarol, and São Paulo, clubs with a rich history in the tournament and aspirations for glory. However, not all powerhouses managed to advance, and one of the most shocking absences will be Boca Juniors. The Argentine team was eliminated after falling in Phase 2 against Alianza Lima at the Bombonera, an unexpected blow for their fans.
With the lineup of participants set, the focus now shifts to the group stage draw, which will take place tonight in Luque, Paraguay. The event, scheduled for 20:00 Argentine time (19:00 Washington, 23:00 London, 04:30 New Delhi), will determine the composition of the eight groups and mark the beginning of the journey to the most prestigious title in South American football.
The draw will be conducted according to the methodology defined by CONMEBOL: teams will be distributed into 4 pots based on their position in the Club Rankings as of December 16, 2024. The champion of the 2024 Copa Libertadores, Botafogo, will head Group A, while the other teams will be distributed in groups B to H.
The 32 teams participating in the draw are:
- Pot 1: Botafogo (Brazil), Palmeiras (Brazil), Flamengo (Brazil), Peñarol (Uruguay), Nacional (Uruguay), São Paulo (Brazil), River Plate (Argentina), Racing (Argentina)
- Pot 2: Olimpia (Paraguay), Liga de Quito (Ecuador), Internacional (Brazil), Libertad (Paraguay), Independiente del Valle (Ecuador), Colo Colo (Chile), Estudiantes (Argentina), Bolívar (Bolivia)
- Pot 3: Atlético Nacional (Colombia), Vélez Sarsfield (Argentina), Fortaleza (Brazil), Sporting Cristal (Peru), Universitario (Peru), Talleres (Argentina), Deportivo Táchira (Venezuela), Universidad de Chile (Chile)
- Pot 4: Carabobo (Venezuela), Bucaramanga (Colombia), Bulo Bulo (Bolivia), Central Córdoba (Argentina), Alianza Lima (Peru), Bahia (Brazil), Barcelona SC (Ecuador), Cerro Porteño (Paraguay)
It is important to note that there cannot be two clubs from the same country in the same group, unless one of them comes from the phase 3 qualifiers. In that case, the team in question will be moved to the next available group.
*The 2025 Copa Sudamericana draw also takes place*
At the same event, CONMEBOL will also conduct the group stage draw for the 2025 Copa Sudamericana. The tournament, with Racing from Argentina as the last champion, will feature several heavyweight teams such as Atlético Mineiro, Fluminense, Independiente, and América de Cali.
The draw will follow a similar format to the Copa Libertadores, including the 32 qualified teams, which will be distributed into 8 groups of four teams. The teams will be divided according to their position in the CONMEBOL Club Rankings. The top seeds will occupy Pot 1, and the others will be distributed in Pots 2, 3, and 4.
The 32 teams that will be present in the draw are:
- Pot 1: Atlético Mineiro (Brazil), Fluminense (Brazil), Gremio (Brazil), Independiente (Argentina), Cruzeiro (Brazil), Lanús (Argentina), Defensa y Justicia (Argentina), América de Cali (Colombia)
