Julián Álvarez's La Liga numbers are becoming increasingly difficult to explain.

Details: The Atlético Madrid forward has scored just one goal in his last 20 La Liga appearances. The remarkable drought stretches across two seasons and is especially striking considering Álvarez's status as one of the most valuable attackers in Spanish football.

The calendar-year numbers look even more dramatic: Álvarez has scored only one La Liga goal in the entirety of 2026. He has also started the 2026/27 league campaign without finding the net, recording zero goals in his first two appearances.

The comparison with his Atlético teammates makes the statistic even more striking. Alexander Sørloth, Ademola Lookman, Nico González, Giuliano Simeone, Álex Baena, Nahuel Molina and Marc Pubill have all scored more La Liga goals for the Madrid club during 2026 than the Argentine forward.

Álvarez's league drought is in sharp contrast to his overall output last season. In 2025/26, the Argentine registered 20 goals and nine assists in 49 appearances for Atlético across all competitions, including 10 goals in the Champions League. It is worth noting that Transfermarkt currently values the 26-year-old striker at €100 million, while his contract with Atlético runs until June 2030.
